“Do you think it is easy to support a family of three? It is not your fault that u are not able to give birth but why must we have a child”, are always the furious words coming from Ravi to his wife when a issue about adopting a child comes about.
Ravi and his wife were farmers in India. They were childless and Ravi never agreed on adopting a child as he had a feeling he will not be able to support it. That was the time when the British sent Ravi and his wife to work at tea plantations in Sri Lanka.
One tiring work day, Ravi was going home in the night. Along a valley he heard cries of a baby. When he looked around he saw a few months old baby in a rubbish bin. On top of the baby was a letter having some information. From the letter Ravi got to know that the baby is child of a poor Sri Lankan. Ravi thought of raising it as he own child to satisfy his wife. They named the baby Surya.
Years went by. Surya became 8 years old. Ravi was getting weaker but never stopped working for his family. That was the time when Sri Lanka got its independence. When Ravi got to know the news he was filed with happiness. He thought of giving Surya good education, building a new house and many more.
Ravi was shocked when he was retrenched because he wasn’t able to speak Sinhala and to make it worst the Ceylon citizenship was announced. As Ravi’s forefathers didn’t live in Sri Lanka, Ravi and his family were stateless. Ravi was devastated. He was having mixed feelings. Having to think the government was unfair made him angry and unhappy but to think that he could not do anything more to help his family make him to commit suicide. Surya was left to support the family.
Surya as furious with the government and he wanted revenge but his mother told him to stay calm. He was thinking of committing suicide and joining his father but his mother told him his father long term desire of making Surya a well educated person. Surya was filed with pain and tears. He made a decision to fulfill his father’s dream that day.
Being to support a family at 8 years old is no small thing but still Surya had to do it. He worked day and night. He worked various jobs. Even though he suffered, he worked hard and saved money. With that money he went to study. At first he found it hard to study and work but whenever he reminds himself of his father’s dream to make him a well educated person he tried his very best to study. Years just went on. Surya mother died of sickness and it was also a time when he needed to enter university. He was a brilliant student but still he was not allowed into the university he wanted. It was due to the university admission criteria. It was advantage toward the Sinhalese and even though the Tamils scored better results the Sinhalese were given the priority. He had no other way than to stop his education.
During that period of time Surya got to know that there was a group being formed to oppose the Sri Lankan government to get equal right for that Indian Tamils. Surya gave thought to the idea of joining this group. Soon he decided to join the group. Soon after Surya joined, the group planned an attack. They named themselves the Tamil tigers. That is when the civil war begun.
A lot of years of fighting went by. The Tamil tigers were preparing for the final attack on the Sri Lankan army. Surya was browsing through his mother’s thing for confidence and blessing from his mother. That is when he saw letter from his mother to him. From that letter he found out that he was an abandoned child who is a Sri Lankan. He was shocked to know that he was fighting his own kind for so long. He was not able to stand the shock. He got an mild heart attack. His group mates left on the campsite with some members. The rest of the group went to fight. After a long fight, the leader of the Tamil tigers was killed, continued by the whole group. The Sri Lankan government won. When Surya woke up he was in a confusion state. When he got to know that the government won he was angry with himself. With the remaining few he fled to India. There he planned and gathered a new team to help the remaining Indian Tamils in Sri Lanka.
